A Common and Pluridisciplinary Lab

Created by Strate School of Design, RbD Lab is a joint laboratory that brings together companies, researchers, experts in robotics and design, and innovation consultancy leaders around PhD projects.

Through a multidisciplinary process, the lab questions fundamental concepts relative to the roles, interactions and relationships between people and robots. RbD Lab's goal is to invent a new ecology of living together: new forms, behaviours, uses and experiences with emerging technologies.

The multidisciplinary collaboration between academic and industrial partners is rooted inside partnering companies and addresses their real challenges. Through the design approach, we imagine a future in which robotics takes on new meanings.

ROBOTS: EMBODIED AI

Through a multidisciplinary process, the lab questions fundamental concepts relative to the roles, interactions and relationships between people and robots. RbD Lab's goal is to invent a new ecology of living together: new forms, behaviours, uses and experiences with emerging technologies.

The research field will focus on three main types of devices and systems integrating IA solutions:

  1. Using pre-existing robots to study their roles in various contexts;

  2. Everyday objects with new behaviours: the concept of robjects

  3. Robots that don’t exist yet, imagined and designed from the observation of human life experiences.

ECOSYSTEMS: ANCHORED IN PEOPLE AND SPACE

Robotic systems will result from a global multidisciplinary design process that starts from real places and stakeholder networks.

RbD Lab wishes to imagine a new world, and to explore the relationships and interactions between actors in this world.

It will question the meaning of robotic systems and AI in various contexts: Healthcare, Supply Chains, Home automation, Services (B to B), Entertainment, the Factory of the future, Education, the City (Smart city).

ECOLOGIES OF LIVING TOGETHER

Design and new technologies allowed us to make a great stride towards designing products/services with which we maintain a true relations over time.

By designing robotics and AI applications and scenarios we put this relationship at the heart of our quest for meaning.

This is what RbD Lab wishes to question on different temporal dimensions focusing on medium and long term in-situ experimentations. This is a fundamental transition in our relation to the world.

By designing and questioning these relations and common life experiences with robotics and AI applications put into various contexts, we will be able to design new ecologies of living together.
